As far as amateur competition goes, I think that a competition is what you feel yourself. I remember one comp where I wanted first place so bad, I could taste it. With my last comp that I participated in, I was doing it for the fun of it - it didn't matter if I won or not. There was no tension on my part.
I was a spectator at a pro comp a few years ago. I had seen them on TV, but never "live." The tension (in a good way) was unbelieveable. I never imagined that such a great amount of energy could exist.
If you plan on competing, go for it!
