Let's take basic forward walk as an example:
1.Starting with both feet together you commence to move forward with your right leg. At this point the right leg is your swinging leg and your left leg is your supporting leg because your left foot remains fixed while your right foot swings forward.
2.Your right foot will make contact with the ground heel first and then go to toe as you collect your weight over your right foot. At the moment your right foot makes contact with the floor it becomes the supporting leg as your left leg becomes the swinging leg. First swinging forward towards the right leg (to complete the step) and then past the right leg into the next step.
This pattern repeats itself. It is easy to follow how the two legs alternate between becoming supporting and swinging legs as each step is taken.
"How to use the supporting foot longer":
You will notice that each time your swinging leg becomes your supporting leg your weight moves onto it from the previous supporting leg. The idea of using your supporting leg longer is to fully collect your weight over the supporting leg before swinging forward into the next step. Another way of sayimg this is, "Settling your hips over your supporting leg". Do not be in
a hurry to rush off into the next step. It is possible to allow your weight (and your hips) to pass over your supporting foot far too quickly. On the other hand this does not imply some kind of stop/ start movement. You still need to maintain a continuity of movement.
Other concepts important to "using your supporting foot longer" are:
1.Soften/ relax your knees as you collect your weight over your supporting leg.
2.Use your hips, thighs and ankles of the supporting leg to aid your forward swing.
3.Delay the commencement of swing of the swinging leg ever so slightly even though you may have to
release the toe of the swinging foot.
You will know that you are using your supporting leg correctly when you get the feeling that your supporting leg is playing an active role in collecting your weight and moving you forwards or backwards. Your movement will become more controlled and yet more powerful.
