hooking the spot turn

I'm taking a mambo and a swing class. I have 2 different instructors. They both have taught the spot turn and they disagree about whether the man should hook his right foot in the back spot turn or whether he should walk backwards in the same way he moves in the rumba cuban walks. They both insist their technique is the proper one. Is both ways OK or is only one right?
