Waltz: Whisk to Wing

My partner and I both know how to get into a whisk, but what exactly is the wing?

After a whisk, I virtually pivot on the spot 180 dgrees and bring the lady across in front of my body so that she finishes up turning more than 360 degrees in just 3 steps. Is this OK. At this point I am backing LOD and my partner is outside my body facing Diag Wall or LOD, ready for both of us to go down the line of dance with me backing and lady facing.

Please help

That's far too much turn for a basic Wing. If you're moving along the line of dance in promenade position, the lady can turn between 1/2 total (to end backing line of dance) or 5/8 total (to end backing diag center). Her body will have turned slightly farther to accommodate the outside partner position, but nowhere near a full turn.

The man is pointing toward line of dance on the first step, then has either no additional turn, or 1/8 turn through the feet thereafter. Most of the turn is done through the body. He begins rotated to the right of the foot alignment (due to promenade position), then ends rotated to the left of his foot alignment, to bring the lady to left outside partner position.

You might be able to push the limits a bit beyond the basic textbook recommendation, but I don't see a full turn being possible without additional syncopated steps for the lady. Actually, there's a name for this: A Running Wing.

Assuming you're talking about a basic textbook Wing, 1/2 or 5/8 is appropriate (albeit body more). Man typically follows with a forward step along line of dance or towards diag center.

Thankyou kindly for your reply.

After reading your post, I realised that I am actually taking 2 measures to get into that outside position, not one.

So after 3 steps my aligment either remains facing LOD or possibly Diag Centre. (Not sure which one)

The lady on the first 3 steps is endeavouring to get across in front of me, but what is her alignment at the third step?

For the second measure, I continue to move fwd on 1 pivot on 2 while still turning the lady so that she finishes outside facing Diag Wall.

Does that sound right to you?
