Difficulties adjusting to new partner

I recently changed dancepartners and now have a slight problem adjusting to my new partner. This is because with my previous one *I* was leading on the dancefloor (I know, not good!) and my new one is now leading me! Now the problem is that I am paying way too much attention on what he is doing rather than on my own steps! Please don't get me wrong, because I'm very happy with my new partner

I don't know whether it is a matter of time to "get used to it", or that I will have to "learn how to dance with him"... Is there anyone with who has gone through (or knows someone who has gone through) the same?

Every new partnership requires some adjustment. Its takes some time for both people to get used to connections and how the new partner moves.

However, since you used to backlead in your old partnership, you have created muscle-memories for leading. His lead confuses your muscles (which are fighting for control), because they want to do something else. It will take some time for you to unlearn some bad habits. To some extent this is a battle of wills, so make sure you don't win or you will end up backleading him as well.

Blair

Michelle,
You have a problem. You will have to do some relearning. My current partner was taught to be "strong" and she translated that to doing it all herself. Many advanced dancers suffer from the same problem. Whenever you see a couple who don't seem to be together and the lady looks overpowering it is actually that she is doing her thing and not following. My partner is working on being sensitive to my lead yet being power when necessary. I have a strong lead so it is not like she has to guess what is going to happen.
Whenever your coach tells you to be sensitive to your partner, it means you are doing your thing and not following his lead. I hope this helps.
