Jofjonesboro. 3/8 of a turn. Doesn't it depend on whether it is underturned or overturned or normal. If you were asked to start on step five to step six wouldn't you Hover with the lady shaping to her left before lowering and then proceeding with 4 5 6 of a Reverse Turn. Before there was a Spin Turn 1922 There was in December of that year what we call the first three of a Natural introduced by Victor Silvester. There was already a Pivot. and there was also a Hover. Somebody put the three together and it got called a Natural Spin Turn.

If the Natural Spin Turn is danced in a corner then there is less turn but it is still not a hover.

To understand why, study the step details for the Hover Corte' in Waltz or any of the Hover figures in Fox Trot. The NST has neither a back-and forth transfer of weight or a brushing action to create the Hover effect.

You may as well call a Double Reverse Spin a Hover.

Polished, are you suggesting an improvement to the recognised technique, or are you suggesting that I am misrepresenting it?

There is NO rise until the e/o 5 on a Spin Turn. You can dance it anyway you like - hover and all!

CliveHarrison. Of course there is no rise untill the weight is over the Fifth Step. Who said otherwise. I would suggest you all go to Marcus Hilton Basic Waltz and look at bar thirteen. What exactly do you see if you stop at the end of bar twelve and move through bar thirteen. What exactly would you call that move. Forward onto the right heel . Then rise and step to the side and slightly back from a toe to a toe and lower the LF which is a TH. Haven't you ever seen dancer start their routine with a Hover. I always have started my Quickstep with a Hover diag to wall against the LOD.The reason for this is I want to do a Progressive Chasse to the centre and I want the first step of the Chasse to be on beats 1 2. So I step to the wall with the RF for a slow. Replace on a slow LF and continue in rhythm which all together is 1 2. 3 4. and 1 2. with the RF.

Interesting.. commencing backwards... thats " old " school ( i prefer it for technical reasons ).

Modern trend is to commence forward .
the last competitor I recall using the B/ward method was Gary Mc Donald .

Terence. On a crowded floor in a competition. I need to claim my space . That is why I think it is best to do a Progressive Chasse to the centre after a Hover. Which gives me a Reverse movement, in this case into a Throwaway Oversway. My Quick Open Reverse then is on 1 2. If I were to start with a Spin Turn I will be on the wrong beat. If I started with a Quarter Turn. Again I would be out of rhythm.

Who said otherwise? YOU did!

step four of a Natural Spin Turn, rising from there onto step five

If it's not what you meant, it WAS what you wrote. I don't need to watch videos to know that there is no rise at all on four, and the rise only comes at the end of five.

CliveHarrison. The main thing here is that step five is a step and not a replacement. After stepping onto it we will rise. The left heel at the end of step four must leave the floor. Next time your out have a look at how many people just replace and not step. Having said that if you look at bar thirteen on step five on the video he doesn't do a heel lead. If you look at Learn the Dances Jonathan does.

Amazing. He gets five steps on one bar of the Waltz? Wouldn't doing so require syncopating every step?

jofjionesboro. If you were taking a Professional examination and asked to demonstrate a Spin Turn. You would start backing LOD into the Pivot 4 and continue on 5 6. If you were asked to do the Natural Spin Turn you would include what is called the first three of a Natural. If you don't understand which you obviously don't That would be two bars of music or six steps.
Your other comments about eye level. It seems to have disapeared along with the thread. If you wore a dance frame which keeps a dancer in the correct position elbow to elbow. It doesn't matter how much you sway. In relation to your own body it stays the same. You might also look on Learn The Dances.
