Establishing connection between partners?

My husband and I have been having trouble establishing and maintaining a connection in our dancing. Someone recently suggested giving each other a hug and then just straightening into proper dance position. That has worked marvelously for smooth dances but we can't get it to carry over into the rhythm dances. The forward feel of the body's center of gravity is missing - all the forward poise is coming from the shoulders and/or arms. Most of the problem stems from not having the weight over the balls of the feet - usually very little or way too much. Is there any hug like suggestion for rhythm dances? Thanks.
Carol
