Yes, I've been to yeehodi.com. Great site! I try to visit lots of different boards because it's a good way to learn about swing on a national level. You're from California? Did you go to Catalina this year?

In Ballroom competition, a couple usually receives a first place, when uncontested, unless they are off time or dancing out of category. In this case, they will receive a second place. This is quite common, especially when dancing the mambo. They are usually scored on the syllabus for age and category danced. If dancing on time and having fun, a couple deserves a first place for an uncontested event. Unfortunately, there tends to be many uncontested events. I'm guessing that the same applies to CW competitions.

"Lindy is the hyperactive swing with all the kicks, like an areobic workout."

ummm...not quite. Sure lindy can be really fast and "hyperactive" but it doesn't have to be. There are many people, myself included who lindy to slower songs. Kicks? I haven't specifically kicked or anything while lindying...charleston is a different story, when you incorporate it into your lindy though...

I'm from Southern California. uh...you said you were moving to Texas, do you happen to know about the yehoodi board? (www.yehoodi.com) It has a message board mostly for new york/texas people and they post info about events--plus its much more lively than here!

I wouldn't think so since wcs is pretty much derived from lindy, but I don't know the first thing about the hustle

I'm back. WCS lean. Yes I got excited I thought I had 61 replies. I'm going to compete in this dance plus 4 or 5 others. Obviously I put a lot of trust in my teacher! I see a lot of people have a lot of different names for WC & EC. As I understand it West Coast is slow & bluesy type of dance like Mustang Sally. Whereas EC Swing is more peppy like like the Big Band sounds. Lindy is the hyperactive swing with all the kicks, like an areobic workout.
I'm from the East Coast and that's my interputation. Any comments.

Ohhh okay.. once again, terminology has created confusion. Too many names mean too many things. In my neck of the woods, west coast IS Hollywood/Dean Collins/smooth style/whatever, so I thought you were talking about lindy the whole time! (Boy do I feel silly!)

I agree, it shouldn't matter what style anyone dances, as long as they're enjoying themselves. I've been a savoy follower my whole lindy life, and I've recently begun planning to move to the Austin Texas area where they do mostly Hollywood. I had the same concerns you do about what the leader would expect me to do so I took an all day Hollywood workshop. It seemed to me that all the differences came about because of the leads, and as a follower I didn't really have a choice but to follow whichever style he was leading- I couldn't possibly try to savoy when he was leading Hollywood and vice versa. So, I don't think you need to worry about not being able to handle a different style on the floor.. just wait to see what the leader is doing.

By the way, where are you from? It's so nice to have this forum where we can just talk about dancing!

Question? Isn't the West Coast Swing and the Latin Hussle from the 70's basically the same thing? Help me quick!

Belle
Thanks for asking! It was great I got a Gold (1st place) in WCS! I got all Golds and one Silver in CHA. There wasn't a lot of competition on my level (newcomer) at this comp. I felt like the judge was very generous. He was giving out golds all night. I think they only time he didn't give out Gold was when he had to choose between two or more couples on the same level. Is this common?
