Why is the line of dance counterclockwise?

I think it's partly tradition, but it may also have something to do with the construction of the dances. I must admit, even as a pro, I don't know the answer to this.

Hi,
My first dance instructor explained it thus:
As the Viennese Waltz used to be danced with only right turns (hence 'natural'), couples needed an easy way to move around the floor. Underturning a right turn allows a couple to move counterclockwise around the floor.
Just one idea. Any others?
