Hi
I love dance more then anything and I've started lessons but I'm concerned about my weight I want to get into competitive and I'm a bit bottom heavy I have big hips and thighs I'm wondering if that will be a problem in judging or if it will burn off from dancing so much. This is really worrying me I always see dancers with perfect legs what should I do? thank you all for reading this!
What are thinking about competing in?

Smooth/Standard or Latin/Rhythm or Nightclub?

One of my favorite dancers to look for at the local comps is this lady who is probably a size 22. She mainly does WC and ChaCha as pro/am. Why, because she has wonderful technique (spins like she's got wings on her feet), well-dressed, and always looks like she is having fun. She's also extremely fit.

On the other hand, I've seen size 8 ladies who look like fish on land, don't even get me started about the outfits, and can't hold their frame for longer than 2 seconds.

One of my teacher's favorite comments is "The heaviest woman I ever danced with was 100 lbs. The lightest over 200."

I would worry more about good technique, than your weight (been there, doing that). When you go to get your competition outfit, take along someone with a good eye for clothes for a second opinion (I luv "Dance Moms" for this.). And get something that suits you and your body shape. Presentation is just as important as technique.

You may have a harder time, every once and awhile, catching the judges initial attention, but if you look the role and dance the role, you'll be memorable. And the next time, you dance in front of the judge, they make look at you first. That's my goal right now.

Hope this helps.
