If you want to improve faster start training for a competition. Nothing motivates you more than the thought of making a fool of yourself in public.

Tell your instructor that you want to compete. He should be able to give you some potential competitions to enter. You can enter Pro/Am competitions (dance with your instructor) if you do not have a partner.

oops sorry also,

Um as far as how long to train, that's entirely up to you. I train around 1-2 hours a day, 3-4 on weekends, 5 on a good day.

But that's me, and I've only been taking lessons since the end of March. I can't help it. Dance is like air to me, if I don't have enough of it I suffocate and go into depression. I swear to god, it's true.

If you're a novice, know this:

quality is better than quantity. It's better to know few moves and dance them superbly than know many many moves and dance with mediocre quality.

Dancing the simple steps more will also make it easier for you to learn new and more complicated things in the future. Basics are like the ground a skyscraper stands on, and the steel structure it is built around.

so, just practice what you know a lot... and.. yeah........
