Does "casual" mean amateur? Are you talking about teaching? Competing? I believe there's a big difference as far as knowledge of the dances and executing the steps and technique.
A professional instructor not only has to know both man and woman parts, but also how to teach it. I taught for a 1-year period. Different people learn differently, and at a different pace. Specific terms did work for some and not for others (i.e., "step in place" "rock step").
I never competed on a professional level. Competing is competing. I would imagine that it's not any different for an amateur than a professional except the requirements, quality and level of difficulty.
This is only my opinion. May someone correct me if facts are otherwise.
