Without having taken my exam at this level, I have no definitive knowledge of the technique, or what point they're trying to convey. But what I can tell you is that right and left side positions are very different beasts, so it doesn't surprise me that they illustrate them differently.
I'm guessing that his alignment is kept slightly under-rotated to account for the O.P. position, as well as to facilitate the immediate change of rotation from right to left. In order for the lady to have the same alignment as man on 3, he would have to lead her to turn left between 1-2, which would be felt as oppositional rotation and interpreted as a lead to CPP on 3. By treating it as an Open Natural between 1-2, the lady continues to move forward and slips naturally into the left-side position.
Could be total malarky, but it's my best guess until I find out more.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Atkinson
