1, 2, 3&4 doesn't sound like Hustle to me, at least as it is danced now. Hustle has evolved since the 1970s, and there have been different styles and counts.

Today, the "official" version is & 1, 2, 3. The & is a 1/2 beat (between 2 beats in the music). However, more advanced dancers syncopate a lot. Advanced followers typically syncopate by adding more steps to the 3-beat phrase. Some advanced leaders syncopate by doing less footwork and concentrate on leading and showing off the lady.

Belle - It's nice to know that I'm doing it right. Since the counting does not really matter in hustle I think I can use some of his patterns and just adjust the counting to "and 1, 2, 3" instead of 1,2, and 3. We'll see. Thanks for to response

I have been doing a form of Hustle (at least this is what it was called) which has the basic step of two steps and an anchoring triple step. Usually forwards to step and backwards to anchor. If I were one to count, then I would count: 1-2-3-and-4. I don't think this is the same as your >and-1-2-3<, or >1-2-and-3<. Your Hustle sounds like the Disco Swing or Disco Fox (which also confuses me). Here they say 1-2-and-3 to Disco Swing and 1-2-3-4 to Disco Fox. I would think that this should be reversed as Fox Trot and Two Step have the 1-2-and-3 or 1-2-3-5.
Question:
Could somebody put me on the right track?
