In many parts of Canada, jive is the generic name for faster (single or double time) swing dancing and East coast swing is for tripletime swing. I think the history behind this is that swing dancing came to many parts of Canada from soldiers being stationed in England during WWII and picked up the British term for swing dancing (jive).

However, the confusion (in Canada) comes from the fact that jive is also the name for the swing dance danced in International style latin. While International Jive is danced with triple steps, it is danced to music that is faster than what is normally used for triple time swing.

East Coast Swing (ECS) can be done in single, double, or triple step. All 3 types are considered ECS. The music (beats per minutes) for ECS is usually set for triple step. Some music is faster and, therefore, calls for a double or single ECS. Single-step ECS can be danced to jive music. I have never heard of jive being anything else than triple step. What makes jive different from ECS is technique.
