Ive been away for over a year, so to add to this discussion for the benefit of others that may read this thread. Yes, my wife chose to have the big toes fused because of arthritis pain and also to have bunion removal on several of the other toes. First one foot, then the other foot. Each time there was a 60-90 day healing period then physical therapy. She was able to return to ballroom dancing after that. She started with wearing a low heal shoe, transitioned to a short heel, then to a moderate heal. She is doing fine a year later.
The physical therapy is important so the person learns how to properly weight/walk on the revised foot. The therapist, understanding the goal was ballroom dancing, also worked on improving core strength, too.
Anyone doing this surgery, find a physical therapist that understands Your goals. If not, seek out a different physical therapist.
