dance floor: ideal size, form and materials ?

Let's say I dream of having my own dance floor (which is true). What is the minimum space needed if one wishes to exercise ballroom dancing ? The ideal form (I imagine rectangular, but I read also about octagonal floors ?) What are the best floor materials ? Maybe someone can refer me to literature on this item ?

The larger the better! Ha ha. I gues it depends on your favorite dances and how much space you have available. There are dances like cha cha, west coast swing, and east coast swing that don't take up as much space as the progressive ones like fox trot and waltz.

Of course I am thinking of the progressive dances such as (slow) foxtrot and (english) waltz, for which applies that the more space you have the better. Square meters however are expensive (buying, installing, maintaining). Hence my question what would be the minimum space required if one wishes to exercise an amalgamation of (I am thinking of international) "modern" ballroom figures.
