Bolero is a very passionate dance. I would describe it as a cross between rumba and waltz. It is danced to slow rumba-like rhythms, and includes rise and fall like waltz. Unlike the other American rhythm or International latin dances, the basic dance position is closed with body contact similar to smooth dances.
I am not sure why you are having problems following in bolero. As a general rule, if you are having trouble following in any dance, there is most likely a problem with your dance frame (or your partner's). Another thing to keep in mind is that bolero is usually taught as a more advanced dance after the other rhythm/latin dances. In other words, it is not the easiest dance.
