every dance has it difficulties (a lot of them ) so fell free to learn first the dance that enjoy you most. as beginner have fun, the boring details will come later.

and remember to take things easy if your wife has back problems - tango is meant to be very staccato in places, but you may want to go somewhat easier on that! but I'm sure you'd thought about that - I once had a partner for whom I had to change my way of dancing quite a lot, so I thought I'd mention that here.

I am not sure which style do you learn? As far as we know, there are two main styles of ballroom dancing: American and international. Some body say that: American style is used more often for social dancing while International style is used primarily in competitions. We are familiar with International style but in social dancing . In International style, there are 5 dances for Standard - Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep and 5 dances for Latin - Chachacha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive.
As our experiences, for this style, the first dance we learn: for Standard - Waltz then Quickstep, for Latin - Rumba then Chachacha. We do not know which is first dance in American style.
