Hi! My boss is hosting a gala for 300 people. This gala is very formal with the men dressed in tailcoats and the women in ballgowns. We are looking at ballrooms but need to know how big the dance floor needs to be because these folks love to Waltz! He specifically asked me to find out how many square feet of dance floor does one need per couple for ballroom dancing - could you please help me???

1500 sq ft seems a bit small Jonathan.
I've been to a few dance holidays at a hotel with a 1500 sq ft ballroom and everyone complains that it is too crowded with more than 100 dancers.

One monthly dance here in Ipswich, UK, regularly gets 250 to 300 attending in a sports hall containing four badminton courts. Sorry, I don't know how big that makes it but it's bigger than 1500 sq ft, and it's pretty crowded with 300.

As you say, much depends on the standard of dancer and how keen they are to all dance at once. I'd go along with your estimate of only 2/3 at any time for general dancing.
Six top competition couples could fill 1500 sq ft but six typical social couples will get bunched up in one corner.

Most dance studios are between 1000 to 2500 sq feet. Waltz and Viennese Waltz require more room than most other dances, so you'll want to give them as much space as possible. But it also depends on the skill level of trhe dancers... professional competitors require infinitely more room than the average social dancer. Also, unless you have something planned to get everybody on the floor at once (like some sort of mixer), you can comfortably guess that you'll never have more than 200 dancers (=100 couples) on the floor at any given moment, so 300 is not as bad as it sounds. I would try to get 1500 sq feet (30x50) if you can.

FWIW, at our local social floor of about 3500 ft/sq, with dancers of all levels but mostly lower intermediates, 100 couples is extremely crowded, and 50 is a full load.
