Could anyone tell me how to dance the fishtail in quickstep and what to precede and follow?

I am assuming you are a man.

After doing a natural spin turn, S S S, dance a progressive chasse to the left start with your RF back in direction of LOD ( or DC ) ending on LF, S Q Q S.

Now you have set up to dance fishtail.(S QQ QQ S)

RF outside of partner, DW....................S
LF lock behind RF, toe.......................Q
RF slightly forward, land on toe.............Q
LF to the side and slightly forward on toe...Q
RF lock behind LF on toe.....................Q
LF forward DW, still in CBMP.................S

You can follow fishtail by dancing a quarter turn (right) or natural turn.

Keh has given a good basic description of the figure. I'm sure you can get/find more detail if you need it. According to the ISTD technique book though, the first step is in CBMP, the last step Keh listed isn't, but the foward step on the RF following that is. The Fishtail can also start facing DC (as leader), commence turn to R on step 1, 1/8 turn between 1-2, 1/8 turn between 2-3. As for precedes and follows, why not quote the book?

Precede: Progressive Chasse, Forward Lock, Tipples Chasse, Running Finish, Running Right Turn, Four Quick Run, V6, Closed Telemark. Cross Swivel, Six Quick Run.

Follow: Any figure commencing with RF fwd. At corner -- LF back with Lady OP, TH, S, into Four Quick Run or 2-12 V6. Tipsy to L into 2-12 V6 DC or 2-5 Back Lock down LOD. At corner -- LF back with Lady OP, TH S, into Six Quick Run.

Here is a good opening 'long' amagamation into the
Fish Tail in the quickstep:

Natural Turn (1-3)--SQQS
Man's Lock Step Backward, Lady Forward--QQS
Tipple Chasse To The Right--SQQS
Lock Step Forward; Lock Step Backward For Lady--QQS
Fish Tail--SQQQQS

Then use the final 'slow' in the Fish Tail as the
start (or step 1) of 1-3 of Chasse Reverse Turn
into Progressive Chasse (SQQSQQS) and if you want to repeat
this long amalgamation, take step number 4 (the
'slow') of the Progressive Chasse as step 1 of
Natural turn.

I also use Fishtail in my American Tango routine.

Here it goes:

After two walks.............................S, S
LF lock behind RF,toe. RF move forward in TH action......................................Q,Q
LF take a large step to the left, BF........S
RF lock behind LF,toe. LT move forward in TH action......................................Q,Q
RF take a large step to the right, BF.......S

Follow with turning Corte finish or Contra check.
