I've never been to a class before...what type of shoes should I wear? I was thinking...sneakers...but don't dancers wear like heels...or slippery shoes? What type of clothes do you dance in? Can I wear jeans?

Thanks!

Jen

Since dancing is classy as well as fun, I try to wear something that's clean, ironed, and that will wick away perspiration. Always wear sleeves. Nothing is as gross as having to take dance hold with a lady who's dripping sweat from her bare underarms.

When I take from a top-level pro, I wear a chiffon skirt and bodysuit (I'm a lady).

When I take a lesson as man (I'm also a pro who needs to learn both parts), I wear slacks and a blouse and sweater.

I have a couple of pairs of dance shoes that I alternate wearing, depending on the height of my instructor/partner.

Have fun,

laf

Jen for dancing why not try Dance shoes. They're kind of pretty, have heels and a suede sole. Great for dancing. Would you go ice skating in your trainers?
To wear? Why not something pretty, or casually smart. For dancing I suggest jeans are a big (BIG) NO NO. They don't look good and they don't dance good. Trust me Jen, I'm a dancer.

Jen, Don't be afraid, dancing is supposed to be fun!! It depends on where you're taking classes and what type (group or private), but beginning classes should ideally teach you the basics of the dance, at least one new step, and practice time.
Partner? What's a partner? If you have someone to go to classes with, great. Usually in group classes you'll pair up with person across the way and then switch--it's better to practice with lots of different leads. And don't freak out if you have to dance with a female instructor--it's like getting a mini private lesson.
Wear what's comfortable for you. Eventually you'll want to get dance shoes; they have a sueded sole that allows for easy turning. Heels or not is up to you--there are lots of choices. I myself feel like more of a "dancer" with heels. As for jeans, they're comfortable and hide a myriad of flaws, but you'll discover that they're usually WAY too hot to wear for dancing. Best best is a skirt; or light slacks or leggings with a tunic over it. There's a lot of mirrors in the studios--you'll discover what looks and feels best for you.
Good luck and keep dancing!
