I meant to tell you that your last variation, Tango, opened perfectly in IE. It was a very slow process, but, nevertheless, I was able to view it.

With the new variation, Rumba, whe I try to download the QT movie, the window appears but then my computer freezes, and I have to restart.

Again, I am able to view the video on Netscape. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to download.

Good luck with that... I hope it works out for you. If you get a chance, download the 9.1 update from the apple website. If I remember correctly, it adds some multimedia functionality and gives you the ability to run iTunes.

What did you say was your operating system again? I think I recall you being on a mac, but I can't remember if you were on OS 9.1 or 10.

I wonder if the size of the video file has anything to do with it. Try one of the really short clips with IE. Go to the new version of our "Learn the Dances" section at www.ballroomdancers.com/Dances/Dances.asp. Try a dance like East Coast Swing, which has short Quicktime clips.

Note: You'll need to do this using the link I described above. If you go to our old "Learn the Dances", the video clips will be linked directly, not through the video player window.

Sounds reasonable to me

I'm running OS 8.6. I have OS 9.0 and will install it next week. I'll let you know the results.

The way you describe it now, it sounds exactly like symptoms of the "IE no longer supporting plug-ins" issue, which I described earlier. You can view video when it's a direct link (as opposed to embedded), you can view it embedded with Netscape, but when you try to view the embedded video with IE, no dice. That's a textbook example.

The thing is, Microsoft's decision to no longer support Netscape-style plug-ins supposedly only affects Windows users, or so I read in the quicktime help articles. I don't know if that means that Microsoft still supports plug-ins in their Mac version of IE, or if it means that it's not necessary to support them, because somehow the Mac OS takes care of it some other way. Seems to me that it's more likely the former. If Quicktime built a non-plug-in version of their player for Windows, no doubt they did so at some point for Mac as well.

Anyway, my only other guess would be your OS... I use a Mac which has OS 9.1 with the latest version of IE and Quicktime and it works just fine. Assuming you already have the latest versions of IE and QT, the only difference between your system and mine (assuming you haven't done any other system tweaks that might affect it) is the fact that I'm using a more recent version of Mac OS. It's a definite possibility, although it is a complete stab in the dark, since I'm not a Mac expert by any means.

I'm on a G3 Mac using OS 8.6.

I can open all of the dances from your home page, except of course, Windows files, but only get a window with a symbol in the centre and a line through it. If I click on that window I get a message saying that I need the latest video/QT plug-in, which I already have.

Looks to me as if the old is better than the new.

By "Windows Files", do you mean the AVI files, or do you mean files opened up in the video player window?

When I click on the Apple in the list of steps for a dance, say Cha Cha, I do not get a window; the QT movies begins to download (?) and when this is completed it appears on my screen in the QT mov ie screen format. Then I ush the fwd arrow and watch. No problems, and some of those movies are bigger than 1MB.

When I go to the new version of your "Learn the Dances" section and click on the QT icon to download the movie, the video window opens and that's as far as it goes. In some cases the window is blank, in others, a smaller window appears with the crossed-out symbol.
