To olga20,
Are you currently attanding any dancing class? Learning to dance requires structures, for the beginners, you can't manage a dance only by reading and seeing.

Generally speaking, Samba figures that you pointed out are very basic, and it's supposed to learn and practice them carefully, since they are not only figures, but also your technique. I only can tell you the most importances: the Samba bounce (used in Whisks, all Bota Fogos, and all, or almost Voltas) and the timing, which I will discuss below to domanhcuong

About your question about the progressive movement in Rumba, if I understand correctly, is the swivelling action of the un-weighted foot. In this case, you don't have to focus much to swivelling action. For example, when you walk forward on LF, your hip must have rotation movement, and this will cause the RF swivel and right toe turn out.

------------------

To domanhcuong,
Dance the Bota Fogos (and other Samba figures that have 1a2 count) seems very hurry. The correct weight distribution is (I will explain in the Travelling Bota Fogos Forward, man's step):

- RF forward, count 1
- LF to side WITHOUT weight, but with PRESSURE, turn 1/8 to R, count a (don't take part weight)
- Take MINIMAL weight to LF, immediately replace weight to RF, turn 1/8 to R, count 2

Of course, you can find your own rhythm, but what I said is the standard technique.

Dear Olga
I assume that you mean the Shadow Botafogo.
I often do Shadow Botafogo at the end of Samba Side Walk or Samba Walk as follows:
Lady is on LF
Man on RF
1a2: RF to L & diagonally forward infront of guy and under guy's left arm. Part-weight at "a". Ending 45 degree inwards to the line of dance.

3a4: LF to R diagonally diagonally forward, part-weight at "a". Ending 45 degree inwards to the line of dance.

Repeat 1a23a4

Hope that you could try it

The International Samba will be presented on Ballroomdancers.com next month. If you can wait just a few more weeks, we will have video clips and technical descriptions of exactly the steps you mentioned.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Atkinson
