How intense are the competitions?

I was wondering if the competitions are really intense between competitors. It seems like it is a survival of the fittest atmosphere.

As far as amateur competition goes, I think that a competition is what you feel yourself. I remember one comp where I wanted first place so bad, I could taste it. With my last comp that I participated in, I was doing it for the fun of it - it didn't matter if I won or not. There was no tension on my part.

I was a spectator at a pro comp a few years ago. I had seen them on TV, but never "live." The tension (in a good way) was unbelieveable. I never imagined that such a great amount of energy could exist.

If you plan on competing, go for it!

Regards, Hoofer

I agree with hoofer - the comps are what you make them. Ask yourself why you're going to competitions - do you really just want to win that trophy, or are you using the comp as a means to measure your improvement? At the end of the day, amateur dancing is all about having fun and to some extent, providing entertainment for the audience. Of course, you will be nervous for your first few comps, and everyone wants to dance well - that's natural. And you will see people taking it oh, so seriously. But don't lose sight of the fun.
Professional comps are different. They CAN'T go back to the day job
