My fiance and I will get married on May 25, and we are terrible dancers. Our first dance will be Harry Connick's "It had to be you," but we don't know how to dance to it. We know we need to take some kind of lessons, but we don't know which style to take! Any ideas?

I suppose there could be other versions, but chances are It Had To Be You is a foxtrot. You'd want to learn American style for this rather than international style. A basic American style foxtrot routine shouldn't be too difficult to pick up and it can look pretty good. International style foxtrot is generally more difficult to dance and you probably couldn't learn it well enough quickly in order to do it for a wedding. As Michelle said, look for some sort of "dancing for weddings" type course. It should give you enough basics that you'll be able to do a few dances. If you want something specifically for your wedding dance, talk to an instructor at a studio about choreographing something for you and/or teaching the routine to you.

Hi Chris,
I've choreographed that dance quite a few times for my wedding couples. They've always used the version from the 'When Harry met Sally' soundtrack. It's a nice speed, and has a nice 30 second intro, so they can walk slowly across their dance floor, smiling and waving, to the corner to begin.

If I'm not mistaking, "It Had To Be You" is a Foxtrot. Best for you and your fiancé(e?) to do is to look for a local dancestudio in the yellow pages and inform about some sort of "Wedding Course" (every studio *should* have one). Give them the music you are going to play on your wedding and ask if they can teach you the dance(s) to it Good luck!

Everyone is right.... the Harry Connick Jr. version of it had to be you is a fox trot but i've heard it, it's soooooooooooo slow!!!! Here's what I suggest, find the Tony Bennett or Frank Sinatra version, those versions tend to be a bit more peppy and are a little bit faster. it's the same song, you'll just be able to dance to it a little better.

My dance instructor has his wedding couples do a mini performance of the dance beforehand. Everyone of the couples appreciated it, since it made them less nervous about the dance at the wedding. So they were able to enjoy it.
