Origin of Box Step in Rumba

How did the box step come to be the basic step in American rumba? Was it that,when the relevant genre of Cuban music first hit the US in the 30's, people decided to dance to it with the fox-trot pattern? On the other hand, I have seen evidence from both Cuba and Mexico that the box step is used in danzon. Might therefore the box have originated in Europe and entered into American rumba via Cuban dance forms?

I always heard that Arthur Murray brought the Box Step to the Rumba, as a way to further reinforce his "inter-related system" of teaching and learning.
