12. Cuban Rocks

Cuban Rocks are an alternative to Cuban Walks, emphasizing hip movement over progression. Each Cuban Rock is taken to quick-quick-slow timing (the first being preceded by a preparation step on a slow count). They can be taken forward or backward, starting with the left foot or the right foot. Because they are taken in closed or open facing position, the man and lady are on opposite feet, with the man stepping forward while the lady steps backward, and vice-versa.

12a. Forward Cuban Rocks

A Forward Cuban Rock with the LF is a combination of a forward rock step LF, RF (quick, quick) followed by a forward walk on the left foot (slow). The Cuban Rock with the RF follows the same rock-step-walk formula, starting with the right foot forward. When taken in succession, the resulting combination progresses gradually, and can be repeated as desired.

The figure begins with a preparation step on the slow count, which can be a step in almost any direction overlapping from the previous figure. Typically it begins with a LF walk for the man, followed by a Forward Cuban Rock RLR, or the opposite, a RF forward walk, followed by a Forward Cuban Rock LRL.

The most common exit for a Forward Cuban Rock on LF is a chasse to right (quick, quick) -- steps 2-3 of the Rumba Box. This also provides a nice transition into a RF back walk to begin Backward Cuban Rocks. For a RF Cuban Rock, a common exit is a LF forward rock as steps 5-6 of the Alternative Basic or 2-6 Alternative Cross-Body Lead. For a complete list of possible entries and exits, see the precedes & follows tabs above.

12b. Backward Cuban Rocks

A Backward Cuban Rock with the LF is a combination of a backward rock step RF, LF (quick, quick) followed by a backward walk on the left foot (slow). The Backward Cuban Rock with the LF follows the same rock-step-walk formula, starting with the left foot back. When taken in succession, the resulting combination progresses gradually backward, and can be repeated as desired.

The figure begins with a preparation step on the slow count, which can be a step in almost any direction overlapping from the previous figure. Typically it begins with a RF back walk for the man, followed by a Backward Cuban Rock LRL, or the opposite, a LF back walk, followed by a Backward Cuban Rock RLR.

The most common exit for a Backward Cuban Rock on RF is a chasse to left (quick, quick) -- steps 5-6 of the Rumba Box. This also provides a nice transition into a LF forward walk to begin Forward Cuban Rocks. For a LF Backward Cuban Rock, a common exit is a back rock as steps 2-6 of the Alternative Basic. For a complete list of possible entries and exits, see the precedes & follows tabs above.
