The promenade position is defined as a "V"-shaped dance position whereby the man and lady travel in the same direction, toward the open end of the "V".

The Open Promenade is a close cousin of the Closed Promenade, having the same number of steps and timing. The word "Open" in the Open Promenade refers to the fourth and final step, which is taken forward (lady backwards) rather than closing the feet. More specifically, it is taken with the man forward in CBMP outside partner on the lady's right side.

Just like the Closed Promenade, the Open Promenade is a 6-count figure that does not fit the 8-count phrasing of Tango naturally on its own. It is dependent on other figures danced either before or after, to form an amalgamation that amounts to some multiple of 8 counts. The most common amalgamations use "6+6+4" timing, by combining two 6-count figures and following with a 4-count Tango Close -- a total of 16 beats.

The Open Promenade can also be checked on the fourth step, in a similar manner to step 6 of the Open Left Turn with checked ending. It leaves man and lady in a similar position, and would be followed by a figure beginning with the lady stepping forward on her right foot, outside partner on man's right.
