3. Hip Lifts Hip Lifts are a type of stylized Bolero Basic where the rock steps are replaced with a stationary hip lifting action. A Hip Lift to the left is begun with a side step to the left, with slight rise to end on a lightly flexed knee. The right foot is then drawn together to the left foot, taking partial weight, with the right leg straightening to cause the right hip to lift. Complete weight is then replaced to the right foot, knees flexed, relaxing the right hip. A Hip Left to the right is the opposite, starting with a side step to the right. Because Hip Lifts are taken in closed facing position, the lady will dance a Hip Lift to Right while the man dances a Hip Lift to Left, and vice-versa. Hip Lifts can be taken in pairs, as a complete substitute for a Closed Basic, or they can be taken individually, replacing either the first or the second half of the Basic.
