13. Side-by-Side Fan
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Side-by-Side Fan
Dance / Level:Full Bronze American Viennese Waltz
Aliases:Flare Promenade, Open Fan
Suggested
Prerequisites:
None

The final figure in the bronze level Viennese Waltz is the Side-by-Side Fan, which begins in left side-by-side position following the Cross-Body Lead to Underarm Turn to Left. It provides the one and only option in the bronze syllabus for following the Underarm Turn to Left when ended in left side-by-side position. It is a figure borrowed from the bronze Tango, but the ending is slightly different: In the Tango version, following the first swivel to promenade position, the man and lady dance a second swivel to end closed. In the Viennese version, the man and lady dance a Viennese Left Cross Turn from open promenade position.

Beginning in side-by-side position facing the wall, both partners turn 1/8 towards each other to step forward with their "inside" foot -- mans left and lady's right -- and then swivel an additional quarter turn on that foot to end in open promenade position. This is done on counts 1 and 2, and the position is held for count 3.

From there, they dance a Viennese Left Cross Turn starting in promenade position: The man steps forward with his left foot, side & slightly forward with his right, and then closes his right foot, while the lady steps forward & across with her right foot, side with her left, and crosses her right foot in front of her left to the counts 1, 2, 3. During these steps, they gradually close the space between them and resume closed position hold.

The Side-by-Side Fan can also begin in open counter-promenade position, taking no turn on the entry into the first step. This position can be also achieved following a Cross-Body Lead to Underarm Turn to Left, but it can also be done with any open side Hesitation to man's right/lady's left.

As an alternative ending, the Tango swivel version can be used in place of the Viennese Left Cross Turn. This is useful when less movement is desired, for example when the figure is begun facing line of dance and the movement following the first swivel is taken directly against line of dance.

The figure as written has no sway during the swivel, but it is popular to dance with a "pendular" sway (man to right and lady to left) on the swivel action, as demonstrated in the video. The sway is then held for the remainder of the figure.
