6. Open Reverse Turn, Lady Outside Fact Sheet
There are three reverse turns in the bronze Tango syllabus: (1) Open Reverse with Lady Outside, (2) Open Reverse with Lady In-Line, and (3) The Progressive Side Step Reverse Turn. The first two are similar: Both are box-like patterns consisting of 6 steps, taken to the counts QQS, QQS. What sets the two apart -- "Lady Outside" vs "Lady In-Line" -- is a description specifically of the position of the third step. The Open Reverse with Lady Outside begins like the first 2 steps of a Waltz Reverse Turn. Man begins facing diagonal center and takes two steps: Left foot forward in CBMP, then right foot to side, with lady dancing the natural opposite. Step 3 is then taken with the man's left foot back in CBMP, down line of dance, with lady stepping forward on her right foot, outside partner. This is the "lady outside" step that gives the figure its name. Steps 4-6 are known as a Closed Finish, and are also similar to the Waltz Reverse Turn: Man steps back on his right foot in CBMP down line of dance, then left foot to side, and finally right foot closing to left foot, slightly back. The lady's part is the natural opposite. Alternative EndingsLike the Rock Turn, all versions of the Reverser Turn can be danced with several possible variations of ending. The Closed Finish is the default ending and is shown as steps 4-6 of this figure. Other endings include: (1) the Open Finish, (2) the Promenade Finish, or (3) the Open Finish to Promenade. These endings are described in detail in the next figure, Reverse Endings.
