4. Natural Turn
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Natural Turn
Dance / Level:Beginning Bronze Quickstep
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Quarter Turn to Right

The Natural Turn is a simple figure consisting of six steps that turns to the right and progresses generally down line of dance. Most of the ballroom dances have a figure called a Natural Turn, each one having its own unique character based on the music, the actions involved, the amount of turn, the rise and fall, and so forth. The Natural Turn of Quickstep is a unique hybrid with a Waltz-like first half, where the feet close on the third step, and a Foxtrot-like second half, with a heel-pull action danced by the man. In the bronze syllabus, it is used exclusively to turn a corner.

The first half of the figure begins with man facing and lady backing diagonal wall. He steps forward with the right foot, then side with the left, and then he closes the right foot to the left, counted "Slow, quick quick", having taken 3/8 turn to right to end backing the line of dance. The lady's part of the first half of the figure is the natural opposite, and she ends facing the line of dance.

The second half nearly mimics that of the Foxtrot Natural Turn. The man steps back on his left foot, then takes a small side step on the right foot to dance a heel pull action, turning 3/8 to right. His final step is forward on the right foot, to end facing diagonal wall oft he new line of dance. Unlike the first half, the second half is taken without rise and fall, and is counted "Slow, slow, slow".

The lady's part of the second half begins forward on the right foot, then side on the left, and finally back on the right foot, also counted "Slow, slow, slow", and turning 3/8 to right to end backing diagonal wall of the new line of dance.

The man's heel pull action keeps the couple in line, and so the following figure, be it a Quarter Turn to Right, Forward Lock or otherwise, will begin with the first step taken in line.
